Comments on the Nature of Information notes

After reading through the notes that were posted about the Nature of Information, I think that the most interesting thing for me is how information is used in society today. I also find it interesting how things are interpreted differently based on your individual knowledge.

For example, artists manipulate many common signs or pieces of information naming them something else in their drawings. I think that they are trying to portray that it doesn't matter what you call the object, the only thing that matters is how it functions and what information it provides to its user.

You are slightly off-target in your understanding of why artists use manipulation of symbols (please note there are 3 different kinds of signs of which a symbol is one)-the point being made by Prof.Rocha was that a symbol is made by an agreement between a group of individuals that certain picture means something. When we see a STOP sign in a red octagon by the side of a road in United States, it is understood that one should stop the vehicle and then proceed. This is the agreement we have. In another country it might be used to convey some other idea.
